BharatNet is a project of national importance established by Govt. of India, in 2017. The project is aimed at creating nationwide optical fiber network infrastructure accessible on a non-discriminatory basis, to provide on-demand, affordable broadband connectivity to more than 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats. The objective is to facilitate the delivery of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, Internet and other services to the rural India. Phase 2 of the project, launched recently by the Govt of India, envisages setting up of WiFi hotspots in every Gram Panchayat, providing Internet connectivity to 6.5 lakh villages.
